☕ Roaster’s Note
Rwanda Gitwe Panda – Lot 1159 (Natural Red Bourbon)
This lot expresses a softer, more refined side of Rwanda naturals. Instead of bold, fermented fruit, the cup leans toward delicate tropical brightness and tea-like elegance.
Expect a gentle citrus character reminiscent of pomelo, layered with the subtle sweetness of rambutan and hints of ripe peach. As the cup cools, light berry tones emerge alongside a soft floral lift. The overall profile finishes clean, with a melon tea-like quality that adds to its clarity and drinkability.
The natural process here enhances sweetness without overwhelming the structure, resulting in a cup that is balanced, nuanced, and quietly complex rather than intensely fruit-forward.
🌿 About the Bean
Gitwe sits in Nyamasheke, a region known for its high elevation and proximity to Lake Kivu, which creates a cool microclimate ideal for slow cherry maturation.
Lot 1159 is produced from Red Bourbon trees, a variety that thrives in Rwanda’s volcanic soils. The natural process here means cherries are dried intact on raised beds, allowing sugars and fruit compounds to fully develop before milling.
Rwanda isn’t traditionally famous for naturals (it built its reputation on ultra-clean washed coffees), but in recent years, producers like Gitwe have been experimenting more. The result is coffees like this—still structured and elegant, but with a playful, fruit-driven twist that stands out on a menu.
