Roaster’s Note

This medium-light roast brings out the juicy sweetness and clean fruit structure classic to high-altitude Uraga naturals, while adding a touch of warmth and roundness to the cup.

Expect a soft opening of stewed prune and dark berries, followed by a vibrant but controlled concord grape acidity — more like grape compote than sharp tartness. The medium-light development enhances the coffee’s natural sweetness, giving it a silky, honey-like body without sacrificing clarity.

As the cup cools, delicate lingon berry brightness lifts the finish, offering a refreshing, lightly tannic snap reminiscent of a young red wine. This profile shines as filter, but also produces expressive modern espresso with jammy fruit and a clean aftertaste.

About this lot

Up in the high, forested slopes of Uraga in Ethiopia’s Guji Zone, farmer Nigusse Nare cultivates coffee on 6 hectares of land passed down through generations. At 2,100 meters, his trees grow slowly under native shade, enriching the cherries with dense sugars and aromatic complexity.

Nigusse farms using traditional, organic practices — compost, mulch, and natural soil stewardship. Coffee has been central to his family’s life for decades, and today he continues the legacy with the help of his wife and children.

In recent seasons, Nigusse began separating small microlots like this Murango Lot to improve traceability and highlight the unique character of his farm. Through collaboration with local agronomists and exporter partners, he has refined his processing and achieved exceptional cup quality.

Despite challenges — unpredictable weather, rising farming costs, and limited infrastructure — Nigusse remains committed to producing some of the region’s most expressive natural coffees. This lot reflects the resilience, craft, and deep-rooted coffee heritage of Ethiopia’s smallholder farmers.
